From attacks on trans kids in sports to undermining access to gender-affirming care, trans people are experiencing a strategic and coordinated attack. But why?

Organizers increasingly use the term “family policing” rather than “child welfare” to recognize how the system surveilles, punishes, and separates families, especially Black, Indigenous and low/no income families. Rather than providing for their well-being, the family policing system is one of many anchors of the prison industrial complex.

Attacks on trans communities aren't separate from the family policing system. Anti-trans policies and legislation across the United States use the family policing system to control and criminalize trans people and our families.

In February 2022,Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Texas Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) directing them to utilize the family policing system to investigate gender-affirming care for young people as child abuse. While Texas was one of the first states to be so explicit in their use of the family policing system, they certainly weren't the last.
